Albany State University (ASU) has announced the appointment of Dr. Allen P. Vital as Vice President for Strategy and University Affairs, effective March 2, 2026. In this cabinet-level role, Dr. Vital will serve as a central architect of institutional strategy, helping translate presidential priorities into coordinated action across the University.
Working closely with President Dr. Robert Scott, Dr. Vital will lead efforts to align strategic planning, institutional effectiveness, and executive operations—areas increasingly critical as HBCUs navigate enrollment pressures, funding challenges, and heightened accountability expectations.
As Vice President, Dr. Vital will oversee Presidential Operations, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Title III and federal programs administration, accreditation and continuous improvement initiatives, university events, and the Project Management Office. The role positions him as a key integrator responsible for ensuring that strategy moves beyond planning documents and into measurable institutional outcomes.
Dr. Vital brings nearly three decades of leadership experience across the HBCU sector, having served on six presidential cabinets throughout his career. Most recently, he served as Senior Advisor to the President and previously held the role of Chief of Staff for the Southern University System. His professional background also includes senior leadership positions at Alabama A&M University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Alcorn State University, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Known for his work supporting presidential leadership, Dr. Vital’s experience spans strategic planning, institutional advancement, crisis preparedness, program evaluation, personnel assessment, and Title III administration—areas that continue to shape institutional sustainability across the HBCU landscape.
A graduate of Southern University and A&M College, Dr. Vital earned his master’s degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and his Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University. He has also completed executive leadership programs at Hampton University and Harvard University and previously served as a U.S. Department of State Muskie Mentor Fellow and American Council on Education Fellow.
