December 12, 2024 – Jackson State University has announced the appointment of Dr. Almesha L. Campbell as the new vice president of research and economic development. Following a national search, Dr. Campbell, a dedicated leader in innovation and research, was selected for her exceptional contributions to JSU over the past 15 years. Her efforts have significantly advanced the university’s research capacity and fostered a dynamic culture of innovation. Under her leadership, JSU is poised to make great strides toward achieving its goal of becoming a Carnegie R1 institution.
“Dr. Campbell’s expertise in bridging academic research with innovative enterprise is unmatched. Her leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to student success set the foundation for elevating JSU’s research mission to new heights,” said Dr. Marcus L. Thompson, president of JSU. “She truly exemplifies the spirit of excellence and innovation that defines Jackson State University.”
A proud two-time alumna of JSU, Dr. Campbell has long embodied the university’s mission and values. In her previous roles as assistant vice president for Research and Economic Development and director of Technology Transfer and Commercialization, she led groundbreaking initiatives, securing more than $12 million in competitive grants. She also played a key role in establishing the Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development, a nationally recognized hub for interdisciplinary research and innovation.
Dr. Campbell expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It is a profound honor to step into this role at Jackson State University. I look forward to continuing to work alongside our talented faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders to push the boundaries of innovation, create meaningful partnerships, and further elevate JSU’s research endeavors.”
Dr. Campbell’s influence extends beyond the JSU campus. As the first Black and HBCU-affiliated chair of AUTM (the Association of University Technology Managers), she has championed inclusive research strategies and facilitated impactful partnerships with organizations such as HP, Princeton University, and Leidos. These collaborations have not only enriched research opportunities at JSU but also strengthened the university’s global reputation.
A native of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Campbell earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and marketing from the University of Central Florida, and both her master’s degree in mass communications and doctorate in public policy from Jackson State University. She is also a proud mother of two daughters.
