Winston-Salem State University has named Dr. Bomani H. Spell as its new associate provost and vice chancellor for student development and engagement, bringing an experienced HBCU student affairs leader to the university’s senior leadership team.
Dr. Spell assumed the role on Aug. 3 after most recently serving as associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Florida A&M University. His higher education career also includes experience at Jarvis Christian University, Tuskegee University and Westminster College.
Throughout his career, Dr. Spell has worked across academic and administrative divisions to strengthen student support services, improve retention and graduation outcomes, and foster campus environments where students feel connected, supported and empowered to succeed.
At WSSU, Dr. Spell will provide strategic leadership for programs and services supporting the holistic development of the university’s nearly 5,000 students. Reporting to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Stevie L. Lawrence, he will oversee the Division of Student Affairs, including campus life, career services, housing and residence life, campus recreation, student health services, counseling and community standards.
“Dr. Spell’s leadership will help ensure that WSSU students have the resources, opportunities and support they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom,” Lawrence said. “His commitment to student success, collaboration and inclusive excellence aligns closely with Winston-Salem State University’s mission and strategic priorities.”
A native of Chicago’s South Side, Dr. Spell describes “Lifting as We Climb” as one of the guiding principles of his leadership and credits his own experiences with shaping his commitment to helping students succeed.
“My lived experiences have taught me the importance of helping others to ensure they succeed,” Dr. Spell said. “I’m excited to improve upon existing programs and develop innovative new ways to help our students as they become the next generation of leaders.”
Dr. Spell joins WSSU as the university advances “We Are Rising,” its new strategic plan focused on priorities including student success and inspiring academics.
