Clinton College has appointed Dr. Pamela Richardson Wilks as its 14th president, ushering in a new era of leadership for the historic South Carolina HBCU. Wilks, a seasoned higher education executive with over 25 years of experience—primarily within HBCUs—will officially assume the role on June 1, 2025.
Currently serving as Provost and Executive Vice President at Paine College, Dr. Wilks has also held senior roles at Wilberforce University, Edward Waters University, and Coppin State University. Her appointment signals a strategic pivot for Clinton, as the institution looks to deepen its impact and reimagine its future.
The announcement received a standing ovation at the Higher Education Leadership Foundation convening at Claflin University, where Wilks was present to celebrate the moment alongside other HBCU leaders.
“I am deeply honored to serve as the next President of Clinton College,” said Wilks. “Clinton holds a sacred legacy grounded in faith, resilience, and opportunity. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to expand access and research, elevate student success, and position Clinton College as a bold, faith-driven institution for the future.”
A proud first-generation college graduate, Wilks earned her undergraduate degree from North Carolina A&T State University and a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1894, Clinton College stands as one of the few remaining private HBCUs in South Carolina and is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
