FAMU AD Angela Suggs Reassigned, John Davis Named Incoming

Florida A&M University has announced a major leadership shift within its athletics division. After months of transition, FAMU has named John Davis as the next Vice President & Director of Athletics, effective January 5, 2026.

The update also confirms that Angela Suggs, who previously served as Athletic Director, has been reassigned and will remain on staff as Special Assistant to the President and Advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics. Suggs has been on administrative leave since June, following legal challenges related to her former role at the Florida Sports Foundation. Her case is now being resolved through a deferred prosecution agreement, allowing her to continue working at the institution.

FAMU President Marva Johnson cites Suggs’ “deep knowledge of NCAA and SWAC compliance” as the reason for retaining her in the advisory position as the university navigates ongoing shifts in financial sustainability, NIL strategy, and competitive balance.

Davis—an FSU football alum, former Secretary of the Florida Lottery, and longtime executive leader—will step into the AD role after the interim period led by Michael Smith.

As the university prepares for Davis’ transition, Suggs’ reassignment marks a significant restructuring within FAMU Athletics, positioning her institutional experience in a different capacity while new leadership takes the helm.
