Hampton University (HU) has taken a significant step in strengthening its financial and philanthropic strategy with the appointment of Dr. Marc Newman as its first-ever Chief Advancement Officer (CAO). This new role underscores the university’s commitment to expanding its fundraising efforts, cultivating strategic partnerships, and enhancing its national profile as a top-tier research institution.
Dr. Newman, a respected leader in institutional advancement, brings more than 30 years of experience in fundraising, donor relations, and university development. As a member of the executive team, he will lead Hampton’s efforts to increase philanthropic investment, engage corporate and foundation partners, and drive key initiatives that support student success, faculty development, and academic innovation.

A Proven Leader in Higher Education Advancement
Dr. Newman’s impact on HBCUs spans decades. He held executive roles with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and spent nearly a decade as Vice President for Advancement at Saint Augustine’s University. He has also played a key role in securing philanthropic investments for organizations including:
- The Better Boys Foundation
- Bethel New Life
- Little Black Pearl Workshop
Additionally, he has successfully led multi-million-dollar fundraising campaigns, secured federal and private funding, and expanded donor engagement initiatives at several institutions.
In his new role, Dr. Newman will oversee fundraising, alumni engagement, and corporate and foundation partnerships, all aimed at expanding resources for scholarships, faculty support, and institutional innovation. His leadership will be critical in advancing the priorities outlined in Hampton’s 10-year strategic plan, Elevating Hampton Excellence, which focuses on:
- Enhancing academic excellence and research innovation
- Expanding financial sustainability through philanthropic investments
- Strengthening stakeholder engagement and donor relations
- Elevating operations and campus infrastructure

Dr. Newman holds a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration with a concentration in Developmental Education from Grambling State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Chicago State University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. He has also completed advanced leadership programs at Harvard University and Vanderbilt University.
