Jackson State University is once again navigating a leadership transition. Dr. Marcus Thompson has officially resigned as president, less than two years after his appointment in November 2023. The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) has named Dr. Denise Jones Gregory—JSU’s current Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs—as interim president, effective immediately.
Thompson’s abrupt departure follows increasing scrutiny of JSU’s executive leadership pipeline and governance structure. He is now the fourth permanent president to leave the university in the past 14 years, not including three interim appointments during that time. His original selection, which came after a closed-door search process, raised flags among alumni and community stakeholders who cited a lack of transparency.
Recent board meetings hinted at internal turbulence, including discussions of personnel matters and potential litigation tied to the president’s job performance. The university is currently involved in multiple lawsuits filed by former senior leaders, citing retaliation and discriminatory hiring practices.
With Dr. Gregory stepping in as interim, JSU joins a growing list of HBCUs confronting questions of leadership stability, succession planning, and institutional continuity.
