Morris Brown College President Dr. Kevin James announced today that he was abruptly removed from his position by the Board of Trustees, a decision he says came without clear explanation.
In a statement shared on social media, James said he was not provided “specific cause or substantive explanation” for his termination, despite having recently passed his annual performance evaluation and holding a contract that extends through 2029.
James also raised concern about the timing of the decision, as the historically Black college prepares for an upcoming accreditation reaffirmation review.
“The timing of this decision is particularly troubling,” James wrote, noting that he believes the action disregards governance best practices and the terms of his contract.
The college confirmed his removal and released a statement thanking James for his service, citing his role in guiding Morris Brown through “growth, resilience, and transformation.” The Board announced that Trustee Nzinga Shaw will serve as Interim President, effective immediately.
During his tenure, James pointed to accomplishments including increased enrollment, clean financial audits, and the restoration of accreditation. He also indicated plans to pursue “all rights and remedies” available under his contract.
Morris Brown College, founded in 1881, is Georgia’s first institution fully owned and operated by African Americans and remains a historic pillar within the HBCU community.
